Lookbook: straight size clothes that plus size girls can wear

Olen viime aikoina törmännyt blogosfäärissä toistuvasti teemaan, josta on keskusteltu aiemminkin. Nimittäin siihen, kannattaako pluskokoisille olla omat vaatemallistonsa ja onko termi "plus size" hyvä vai huono asia. Esimerkiksi malli Ashley Graham ja näyttelijä Melissa McCarthy kuuluvat kyseisen termin vastustajiin ja ovat sitä mieltä, että naisia ei pitäisi luokitella koon perusteella.

Kaunis ajatus sinänsä, mutta...hei haloo. Vaatevalmistajat eivät tule koskaan tekemään joka ikistä vaatetta joka ikisessä mahdollisessa koossa. Se ei ole realistista, eikä myöskään todennäköisesti taloudellisesti kannattavaa. Ja niin kauan kuin kaikkia vaatteita ei ole saatavilla kokoskaalan toisesta ääripäästä toiseen, pluskokoisten (ja myöskin pitkien ja pienikokoisten) mallistot helpottavat huomattavasti kuluttajan elämää. Kun Lindex taannoin poisti plussamallistostaan Generous-nimikkeen, olin hyvin hämmentynyt siellä shoppaillessani. Mistä nyt tiedän, mitkä vaatteet mahtuvat minulle, ja mitkä eivät? 

Ja siitä päästäänkin tämän postauksen varsinaiseen aiheeseen. Olivat plussamallistot sitten hyvä tai huono juttu, varsinkaan Suomessa niiden tarjonta ei edelleenkään ole kummoista. Vaikka tilanne on mennyt parempaan suuntaan, iso osa plussamallistojen vaatteista on edelleen tätimäisiä telttoja ja niiden hinnat ovat "normaaleihin" kokoihin verrattuna pilvissä. Sen takia olen pyrkinyt itse yhä enemmän kokeilemaan onneani perusmallistojen puolella, ja tulokset ovat olleet yllättävän hyviä.

Tänään ajattelin kuitenkin tehdä vähän laajemman, lookbook-tyyppisen postauksen niistä löydöistä, joita olen erinäisten liikkeiden perusmallistoista bongannut. 

Tarkoituksena ei ole tosiaankaan mitenkään mollata plussamallistoja, ja olen hyvin tietoinen myös siitä, että 46/48 -kokoisena olen etuoikeutetussa asemassa isompiin pluskokoisiin nähden. Haluan kuitenkin rohkaista ihmisiä kokeilemaan eri kokoisia ja mallisia vaatteita, varsinkin kun siinä samalla saattaa säästää vähän rahaakin.

Lately, there has been a lot of talk in the blogosphere about the term "plus size" and the need for separate clothing lines for plus size people. At this point, everyone has probably heard about Ashley Graham and Melissa McCarthy, among others, wanting to drop the term "plus size" because women shouldn't be categorized according to their body size. 

Now, I'm sure Ashley, Melissa and others who agree with them mean well. In a perfect world, every single piece of clothing would be available in every single size, and there would be no need for a separate plus size line. However, we don't live in a perfect world, and the fact is that brands are NEVER going to do this. And as long as there are clothes being made in only certain sizes, having a plus size line (or a petite line, or a tall line) really is helpful for us consumers. 

There is still much work to be done when it comes to plus size lines, though. Especially here in Finland, most plus size clothes are still kind of matronly and baggy, and the prices are ridiculous compared to straight size items. Which is why I have been shopping more and more at the straight size sections of different stores and just trying stuff on. Sometimes it fits, sometimes it doesn't. But if you look at my "in the dressing room" posts or this post on the ASOS main range, you'll see that I have found a lot of great stuff. Which brings us to this post.

I wanted to do a kind of lookbook on the clothes that I have found in straight size stores, just to show people what kind of things might work on plus size bodies and to encourage people to try on different things - and maybe save a bit of money at the same time. 

Now, this post is in no way meant as an offence toward plus size clothing lines, because as stated above, I think they are a good thing. It is merely meant to show people who don't have the opportunity or money to buy plus size clothes what kind of options they might have at straight size stores. I'm also aware that as a "smaller" plus size woman I am privileged when it comes to straight size items, but I have tried to pick clothes that are stretchy and could also work on bigger babes.

Lopuksi vielä kysymys pluskokoisille kanssasisarilleni: kokeiletteko mielellänne myös perusmalliston vaatteita, ja millaisia kokemuksia teillä on siitä? Oletteko esim. saaneet myyjiltä oudoksuvia silmäyksiä mennessänne kauppaan, jossa ei myydä pluskokoisia vaatteita? Ja mitä mieltä muuten olette näistä pluskokoihin ja peruskokoihin jaotteluista ja niiden toimivuudesta?

I know I've had a few surprised glances from staff and other customers when shopping in a store that doesn't cater to my size...
